Any "minimums" are just that- the minimum. I would recommend going above if possible. I have used both a 50 gallon tank/tub and the Kaytee Multilevel Ferret Home. Whatever cage you choose, make sure to modify accordingly be it ventilation or mesh to accommodate too large bar spacing.
*DO NOT place the cage in direct sunlight or provide a reptile lamp because the UV rays can harm the STO as they are susceptible to skin cancer. Also place it away from other pets as the other pets can increase their likelihood of biting.
*When taking in to consideration the size make sure you can fit:
This could be a checklist for your STO
- Wheel - this is a must as they burn their energy every night on their wheels
- Water bottle or bowl - a bottle will stay cleaner longer while bowl increases humidity
- Food bowl(s) - one for dry and one for wet - Don't forget food!
- Climbing aids such as ropes, ladders, branches, etc.
- Sleeping hide(s) - this can be anywhere from a store bought 'igloo' or a hanging fleece pouch
- Enrichment toys and treats
- Litter box if you chose
*STO's can be litter trained and often will go in one corner of the cage, which can be the litter box.
*You will need to chose a bedding for the cage. Common beddings include:
- CareFresh
- Disposable cage liners
- Fleece
- Aspen
- Corncob bedding
- DO NOT use pine or cedar
*STO's gather materials to nest, so be sure to provide materials they can gather such as:
- Fleece strips
- Strips of paper towels
- Tissue or toilet paper
*Provide a temperature range between 70-85F = most home's temperature
*Provide a humidity range between 40%-50% = this can fluctuate however cracked ears can result from too low humidity.
